Guidelines. Each student will select a song about love that they want to share with the class. You can choose any song you like, as long as you can obtain a copy of the lyrics and that it is relevant to the topic of “love.” You will write a 300-ish word analysis of your chosen song.
- First, you will briefly summarize the main points/arguments of your song. What is the overall “message” or “theme” of your song? How is love being represented? What category of love song from (the following link will open a new window) “Is the Love Song Dying?” might your song fit into? (Your summary should be no more than 100 words).
- Then, you will analyze closely the lyrics of the song and identify in them aspects of societal norms/expectations as well as personal experiences. Consider:
- What definitions or understandings of love is the song conveying, supporting and/or challenging?
- Does the song have a realistic/unrealistic view of what love is?
- Is the song a commercialized representation of love?
- Does the song reflect what you or others think love “should” be? Along with your analysis, your submission must include the song title, the full song lyrics, the name of the artist/group, and the year of the song’s release. (These elements are not included in the word count.) Come prepared to chat about your song with the class, too!
